Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

I'm trying to simulate a miura-ori paper fold using Kangaroo.  The hope is that I can then go on to manipulate and change the fold pattern to generate new architectural forms.

I can understand the basics of the hinge force for creating a single hinge between triangles, however I am unsure as to how this can be used on the miura-ori pattern which is formed from parallelograms instead.  I know this can be done as I've seen examples of the simulation but I've been unable to find any definitions and would very much like to understand myself how to construct the script.

Any suggestions of a starting point to the definition? Or how the hinge force can be used when the hinge is not being used between two triangles.

Hi Charlotte,

did you have look into this file?
Origami_example.gh

I
t's from the Kangaroo Example files and shows the forces that need to be applied:

- Springs for the edges (with a very high stiffness)
- Planarize (in case of quadrangular panels) high stiffness
- Hinge force (not so stiff), which is the one that actually does the folding, the others are there to maintain the rigid planar shape of your faces

Thanks for getting back to me Ben.  I have looked at this script previously but was wondering if there was any way to achieve the definition without the use of the C# scripting component as this is way beyond my grasshopper skill level at the moment.

Hi Charlotte, I will send you the definition I have used for this: http://mamou-mani.com/karenmillenxmas/ check your email :)

That would be so helpful.  Thank you!

Hi Arthur, I checked out your work at Karen Millen and find it inspirational. May I ask you to share the miura-ori definition with me?

Hi Jakub, can you give me your email please?

Hi Arthur, it´s formularny.mail /at/ gmail /dot/ com. Thanks in advance!
