algorithmic modeling for Rhino
Hello. Not sure if this is the right place for this post but I attempted to install the Grasshopper Assembly for Visual Studio (found here) but the install failed. I have attached the error log: VSIXInstaller_abc34f39-6db0-43e4-99e7-c3ee6c96f0b3.log
The error log indicated that the installation fails at the following:
7/1/2015 10:42:14 PM - Install Error : System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.ExtensionManager.ExtensionManagerService.CheckForValidDotNetFramework(IExtension extension)

at Microsoft.VisualStudio.ExtensionManager.ExtensionManagerService.InstallWorker(IInstallableExtension extension, Boolean perMachine, AsyncOperation asyncOp)
It also should be noted that I have an expired trial version of Rhino and grasshopper won't start anyway so this isn't terribly important. Could this impede the installation in any way?
Any help with this would be helpful. Thanks!!

Hi Michael
this looks like a problem in the installer for .visx files. Have you tried installing any other extension? Did that work?
Thanks

Hello Giulio,
Thanks for the reply! I was able to install the Rhino common Visual Studio plugin successfully on my personal machine. I was also able to successfully install the grasshopper Visual Studio plugin on my machine at my office. This is why I was asking if the state of the Rhinoceros license may effect the install being that my machine at the office has a fully licensed copy. Thanks again and I hope that this gives you some information to go on.
Hi again Michael,
the state of the license should not affect the extension. While the VS extension needs some Rhino-related assemblies (RhinoCommon.dll, Grasshopper.dll, etc) it does not perform checks of license of any type. If there is no license, you will not be able to debug, though.
In addition, I would say again that the error is a VS one, not a Rhino-related or extension-related one.

Thanks for the reply. I'll look into possible VS installation issues. Thanks again.
Hey, I seem to stumbled upon the same issue as Michael.
I've attached the pop up screen shot which appears after trying to install, after pressing close another pop up message saying - "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" appears.
Could also attach the log if that helps.
I don't think it's an issue regarding .vsix file in general, I managed to install other ones.
Perhaps it's a problem with the version ? I have visual studio 2013 community edition installed which I think should be supported, but maybe it's a newer version than the one actually supported?
Also would be great to manage to make it work on Visual studio 2015 community.
Thanks a lot,
boris
Hi Boris
the community edition of VS 2013 is a version that has been untested so far, but that, as you mention, should likely work. Would you be able to tell me if the RhinoCommon template package works? Try installing that one.
PS: VS2015 is not supported yet, and we are working on extending support.

Hey,
installed RhinoCommon on VS2013 without any issues, perhaps it could have also worked on VS2015 just by adding the new version number to the supported versions in the manifest file of the VSIX file manually?
I did manage to set up a working project on VS2015 community edition following (more or less) the steps in the grasshopper SDK document in the Project Setup (C#) section.
The only issue that took a while and was tricky for me was setting up debugging but now it seems to be working properly so if I could help in any way in providing more information, i'd be happy to do that.

We uploaded a new version that also targets VS 2015. Although it seems that the bug was fully internal to Vs 2013, hopefully that should fix the issue.
Please let me know if you have a chance./p>
Thank you, really.
