GIMP is hating me right now

I have made nearly 1700 pictures and I wanted to make a GIF Animation out of it ...

Now in GIMP you write beside every picture, how long it should stay on the screen ... So I did that too ... Example: pic1 (2000ms) ... Means the picture is going to stay for 2 seconds on the screen ...

Maybe I should make a video first? ... Which free program is good for this amount of pictures? ...

I appreciate your help and advice ... Thank you in advance ...

Is there a free software, that can make me videos out of the pictures? The pictures have very different times (times, where they stay showed on the screen)!

Can I make in Virtual Dub many AVI videos with different frame rates and stich them together?! (Can I stop the last frame from the previous video one second before starting the next video, which has a different frame rate?)

I made like 4000 frames and have put them in virtual dub to get a video with a constant fps ... it was a lot of work! ... everybody is hating ahmed maaaan! :)

I've never used either vd or gimp so you are out of luck there. My weapon of choice would be adobe after effects where it would be very easy to do what you want, once you managed to remove the intuitive part of your brain and plugged the adobe one in that is.
