red canvas and incomplete components

Something big crashed during a redraw process. Grasshopper caught the crash and disabled the redraw in order to prevent another uncatchable crash from bringing down Rhino. This way there is a better chance you can still save your work.

You can turn the canvas back on via the 'Reset Canvas' menu item in the View menu (it's the first item, but only visible when the canvas has been blocked from redrawing). There should always be a message box when the redraw is disabled. Something that starts: "An exception was thrown inside the drawing pipeline" and then goes on to list the most likely cause. If this happens again, can you post a screenshot of that message? Or, if it happens again, can you post the file so I can try and replicate it here?
