algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Query: Trimming Surfaces

Fairly new to grasshopper, a lot of fun but I've have run into a wall.

In the image below there are three part; A Surface I am trying to trim, a planar Polyline that is my trim shape And the end result I hope to achieve.

I would like to Trim a surface with an Outline, an operation I expected to be simple but I just can't seem to get it. I've tried extruding the outline as a solid and then using Solid Trim but it just brings up a

Warning: Boolean Trim set is Empty

Any advice or possible workarounds?

I've used found this messy workaround, it'll work but is there any advice for doing this in a more graceful way?
