Is it possible to simulate dynamic wind pressure acting on a tower with Karamba?

Hi all,

Currently working on my master thesis, I have been applying wind loads to tall (100m) slender (+/- 35m x 20m in plan) buildings in Karamba.

Whilst I have managed to approximate the pressure and suction on the windward and leeward sides of my towers relatively well, I am now wondering if/how I could somehow take into account dynamic loading induced on the towers lateral sides due to the vortex shedding phenomena such tall buildings encounter?

If I have understood correctly Karamba only allows basic simulation of a wind load?
For example via the application of a uniformly distributed (static) load on a façades nodes, as shown in the "twisted tower" tutorial provided on the Karamba3d website.

Basically, I am unsure as to whether I am here limited by my own programming competence or the actual capabilities of the Karamba software!

If someone with more experience can enlighten me it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Nathan

Hi Nathan,

the frequency of vortex shedding should not coincide with the natural frequency of the structure vibrating in cross wind direction. In Karamba3d you can calculate the Eigenfrequencies of a structure with the 'Natural Vibes'-component.

The frequency of vortex shedding is connected to the Strouhal number. See text books on aerodynamics of structures for details.

Best,

Clemens

Hi Clemens,

Ok, thank you - As a relative beginner I was unaware of that functionality; I'll look into it!
