Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hey everyone,

I am really interested in understanding how this project, Esker House by Plasma Studio, was made.

Is it possible to do something similar using grasshopper?

I believe the original form was made without any parametric process, but what kind of script could be used to turn it into the final product?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Trice,

Esker House was modelled back in 2005 using FormZ. Rhino was not in the scene yet. The whole house/model is based on those dark grey surfaces in your first image of the sequence. We created a series of perpendicular surfaces and then intersect those with the original dark grey surfaces to get a series of contours or sections, which were just lines. Those lines were "offseted" outward to create a gap between the original surfaces. Then we used sweep using those lines as paths, and using 2 different sections: a square for the smaller wooden lamellae and a double "T" or "I" sections to create the structural arches. And then finally, those lines-sections we got a the very first intersection process, we used again to generate the additional lines that run beneath the main elements.

The whole process was manual. Every time there was a change in the original base surfaces we had to rebuild everything again.

Nowadays it would be relatively easy to do the whole process with GH super fast. The process I described above can be very much the same way you can make/write your definition with GH.
