algorithmic modeling for Rhino
I am about to change computers.
I have a very complex grasshopper file, with lots of additional external components used:
Kangaroo, Bumblebee etc...
When I opened my file on the new computer I have an alert which dsiplays which components are not installed, which is fine.
I have tried to locate them on my worksheet in order to see that I can change them to normal grasshopper command to make my file more "transportable".
I used the magnifier glass icon on the worksheet to locate them, but unfortunately it seems to me that it can find standard grasshopper widgets only.
Is there a way to find them on the worksheet?

I can search for components from plugins as well. I think you can only search for them if the plugin they are coming from is installed, which makes sense, as otherwise Grasshopper would have to keep a list of every component of every plugin.
Can you locate them on your old computer, where the plugins are installed?
I for one keep a copy of the components folder in my dropbox to make sure they are synced on my different computers, but I guess it would be nice to be able to save a "portable" version of a file, which includes all its dependencies. But since that would most likely entail quite a different approach to how plugins are loaded, I cant really see that happening any time soon, unless David has some surprises up his sleeve for GH2.
Thanks for you reply. The dropbox idea is great. How is your system to organize plugins?
I wouldn't really call it a system, but I just do a manual syncing of the dropbox folder every now and then. Its in dropbox as we are several people, each with several computers, but all need the files to work on those computers. I guess GH and Rhino isn't really big enough yet to take into account enterprise level concerns.
Its still kind of tedious migrating to a new computer (using Windows) or using several at once, like we do here at the office. But since you cant really migrate a Windows installation the same way you can on Mac, I guess its going to stay like that for the near future.
Lets hope we get full GH on Mac soon, so there is one less reason to use Windows using Bootcamp ;)
I am on PC. I heard that MAC is another universe, but pricy. I am not sure about the advantages.
If I understand your solution correctly, your grasshopper plugins on each computer are synchronized with you dropbox. In other words your user objects and components folder (where plugins) are stored are on dropbox, right?
How can I set them to be read not from the default place?
I dont have the folder set to the dropbox folder itself, thats why I said its still a manual process of syncing the local dropbox folder with the components folder. It still only takes less than a minute to do the quick copy paste from one folder to the other after I added a new component on one of the computers.
Actually it would be possible to do on a mac by using symbolic links, basically a shortcut, but to the software basically indistinguishable from an actual folder, which wouldn't be the case for a normal shortcut. I have done this with dropbox before and its working fine, but I guess you have to know (and remember) what you are doing, as things can get pretty confusing quickly and you could potentially create all sorts of weird feedback loops. So proceed with caution.
You would create a components folder in your dropbox, copy the components from GH into it, then create a symbolic link to the folder in dropbox and place it where GH's component folder is. Then delete GH's component folder, so only the symbolic link with identical name is in there. Now GH will load the components directly out of the dropbox folder and any changes to it would sync all across computers where you have replaced GHs folder with a symbolic link of the shared components folder in dropbox.
I think the best and easiest solution would just be for Grasshopper to let us change the components and user objects folder in settings.
Thank you for your detailed explanation.
