I have not found a good explanation for the use of it's function : flatten-reverse -graft-symplify

The subject of data trees is discussed endlessly on this forum.  In this case, without 'Flatten', the three surfaces you want to 'Join' are in two separate branches of the tree.  Two lists so two results.  With 'Flatten', you have one branch, one list, one result.
