algorithmic modeling for Rhino
Hi all,
I want to get the shape and eventually the structure of a gridshell design into grasshopper. I made the design for a pavilion as part of an assignment. Some sketches of the design with rough dimensions are in the attached files. I must say I am a beginner, but I tried to get the floorplan into grasshopper. And from there I made a sort of tunnel with arches. I want the top of the tunnel to have a sinusoidal shape (like the shape that can be seen in section concept 1).
What I tried now isn't working, the sinus only holds for half of the tunnel, see attached gh file. But I can't figure out why. I really feel stupid, but I am not used to working with such a program.
Another problem is that I don't know how to connect the side tunnels to the bigger tunnel. I hope you can start me in the right direction. (and I hope I used the discussion page in the right way)
Thank you in advance.
Earnest

I propose you to model with quads and to smooth then with Catmull Clark of Weavebird pulgin.
For the modeling process you have to move points of your model. F10 on rhino, select points and move then with gumball. Thats quite simple. The most simple thing is to have just one mesh. You will see that I put Weld ... it is useful if you select the other meshes (just quadrangles).
At the moment it is just mesh, but it could be transformed to BREP with TSpline or Rhino 6 WIP. But I am not sure you need BREP to make gridshell.
Hey, thank you very much Laurent!
I think I can work further with this
Hi Earnest
If you tend to work on this organic shapes T-splines is best choice.
import sketch of plan in rhino by using pictureframe command, set it on grid and then scale it, by T-splines on boxmode make a quad grid shell based on plan (two columns of desired quads for each tunnels at least), turn the points of vertices on and then import sketch of section and set it vertically and based on plan, so set the height of mid points and bring them to sketched curves, last step is smoothing manipulated grid shell and in other words switching mode to smoothmode.
In this cases when we forced to set the shape manually, grasshopper can't simplify steps of making our geometry, maybe just when we want to assign a shell structure or grid shell pattern to our surfaces it works great, by using some plugins like weaverbird and lunchbox.
Cheers!
Thank you ali, I will also try it in this way!
