Scale, reduce size by a set distance

Is there a way to reduce the size of an object by a set distance?

EG: shrink an object by 0.5mm, assuming you are shrinking it from the centre of the object.

Which leads me to the second question is there an easy way to determine the centre of an object?

Currently I am decomposing a mesh and using a list and slider to find the centre point; it would be nice if this was done automatically.

Try This? (You can use Volume to get the Centroid of an object if its closed, or area among other tools for 2D objects or surfaces ) If its open.. Hmm maybe boundary box the object and Volume this box, though this gives you a different centre pt for the original object)
