Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Would it be difficult to add an input for the curve offset component to allow us to control the tolerance?  A lot of the times when my offsets fail it's due to the tolerance.

Thanks,
ryan

Hi Ryles,

are you getting small mistakes in the offset, big mistakes, utter failures? Do you always adjust tolerance downwards or upwards, or maybe you have to finely tune the tolerance for each case?

I know Curve Offsetting has a lot of problems, but I'm not sure allowing tolerance tweaks is the right solution here.

I'd love to see a collection of curves that fail with offsets, maybe I can convince the math-heads in the office to take another look at offsetting.

Hey David,

--------are you getting small mistakes in the offset, big mistakes, utter failures?

In Grasshopper, most of the time if it fails to offset I get nothing. In Rhino, outside of Grasshopper, I sometimes get portions of the curve to offset.

-------Do you always adjust tolerance downwards or upwards, or maybe you have to finely tune the tolerance for each case?

In Rhino I usually start at 0.001", if that fails I'll try and clean up the curve as best as I can and try again. If that fails, I'll lower it to 0.005", and make changes in increments of 0.005", so I'll try 0.01" next.

I'll start collecting curves that fail from now on and send them to you. One thing that might be of importance is that I am offsetting closed curves, almost always inward.

Thanks for the reply,
I appreciate it.

Hi guys,

Is there an update on this request perhaps?

I am also in need of a tolerance option in the grasshopper offset element.

The reason that I need it, is basicly the same as in the original request.

I have to offset curves that sometimes fail without the tolerance option.

When doing it 'manually' 1 by 1 in Rhino it mostly works out with adjusting the tolerance.

I use a it to make bounderies for my CNC milling paths, I need several offsets per object according to the tool diameter.

thanks!

Denny

No update, too many components would benefit from a Tolerance input to make the change everywhere, so instead it's something that'll have to get fixed for GH2.

I attached a C# script component which performs an offset with tolerance input, may it serve you well...

Hi David,

thanks for the quick response,  will try the script.
