RAF,

It sounds like maybe you have an "empty" Parameter...

From the Param Tab (1st Tab) these components all hold/reference things.  They don't really do anything unless you right click the empty component, then look down the list of options till you see "set one line" or "set multiple lines".... this is when you then select the line/lines you want the component to hold/reference.

If you found my jumbled description helpful at all... I would strongly suggest looking at one of the beginner tutorials here.

I think the Modelab Primer is especially good... here

an orange component is "empty", while the grey color show it references something specific.
