algorithmic modeling for Rhino

All,

I need to simulate a system that contains joints that are released in tension but can carry compression and also can always transfer shear. It is a slotted connection in real world.

Ideas on how to achieve?

Hi,

what you can do is use the Tension/Compression Eliminator. It uses a naive iterative scheme to eliminate either all elements (optional of a specific set of element Ids) in tension or compression. If it converges strongly depends on your system, but I successfully used it for a rather complicated system with contact elements - little elements which only act under compression, but not in tension.

Good Luck

Cheers Rob,

I thought about that one - but I need to keep the shear connection so if I eliminate the element things start to fall down.

Maybe I could use the output "active/inactive" from that component to trigger a modification in the releases?

yes that would be an option i guess, if you can neglect the shear connection during the iterations of the tension-compression elimination.

another option would be to model a second set of elements which maintain the shear connection and always stay in there, and the first set of connections next to them are eliminated in tension..!?

oh that second one is a really nice idea! Two members on top of each other. One carries shear only and the other tension/compression and gets eliminated.

Will let you know how I get on with that as an idea.
