Simulating IES lamps file through RAD materials

Hi to everyone,

in this tutorial ( http://diva4rhino.com/page/simulating-luminaires-with-ies-files ) is shown a method to simulate a lamp in DIVA. Considering that the process is about a modding of radiance materials, do you think that it would be possible to do the same in honeybee?

To go deeper I have tried to do the tutorial about DIVA, but in its grasshopper version: it doesn't work. To be more precise, the material, applied to a brep, is not read by the DIVA daylight simulator. Actually I don't know if I'm mistaken about some details.

it would be great if only it could be possible in honeybee! for instance I have found this study which is pretty interesting to calculate lamps power consumptions directly in honeybee: https://sites.google.com/site/just4architecture/research/responsive...

Hi Mostapha,

I have changed your component a little. Reading the batch file with the notepad the string was something like

ies2rad -o mylight iesfile.ies -m 0.765

and it didn't work. Now it is

ies2rad -o mylight -m 0.765 iesfile.ies

below you fine the new version. I'm new to the python language, I hope I did it fine.

Hi Claudio, The order usually doesn't make a difference in RADIANCE but looks like you are right in this case. I didn't know that. I checked your code and it looks great. Thanks you so much!

Hallo Mostapha, (just for info if someone else is facing the same)

I am not sure if i am doing something wrong but the updates when working with the ies components are not working with me...i just took the old version IES2HB_WIP_III and it works :)

the update is Feb_01_2015 which i am not able to make it work; the old one April 26 2014 works with me

but in both ways! thanks for the lovely applications you made!

hallo Claudio, I am reading the discussion here and i ended up with the same problem when i rotate the ies files...what did u disconnect and connect again? thx for ur help if you have time.

Hi nass, What is exactly the problem? Do you get the warning that you scaled or mirrored the IES object which you shouldn't?

hi mostapha , well yes i get this message too: IES .... is scaled or rotated and cannot be added to the scene' error.

so any tipp?

Cool! Well as the warning says you are not supposed to rotate or scale and IES object. IES files don't carry the data for rotating the geometry so if you want them rotated you need to find a rotated IES file.

Hi Mostapha,

I'm due to start the analysis I said last week, however, the IES2HB doesn't make its bat file running. Remembering what you told me, I'm logged in as administrator but nothing still happens. Any ideas?

Yes, it does. Either I'm logged as Admin or not. If I do a static analysis it is ok, but if I use the multipliers as genes it doesn't work not doing all the process automatically.

Ha! So it only happens during the optimization studies?

Have you tried to add a delay in the process? You can either do it in Grasshopper or inside Python. That may help.

I can't test it right now but I can give it a try later today or tomorrow. I may also add a check and if the results are not produced re-execute the batch file.
