Merging the process of recycled construction waste materials + digital tools
uA collective, Blokcad Lab and the Pontificia Bolivariana University Medellin are excited to announce an upcoming collaborative workshop, INSITU Medellin. Lead by uA-collective co-founders and Blokcad Lab, INSITU is a weeklong workshop for architecture students and professionals in Medellin, Colombia that will investigate how ceramic materials can merge with new technologies to create small-scale interventions that influence urban space.
Colombia has a long tradition in masonry architecture, and an ability to express architecture through materiality. Its use of ceramic materials in historical and modern projects has demonstrated how the sense of place can be influenced by not simply the form, but more by the material expression.
At a material level, participants will explore Blokcad Lab’s innovative process of repurposing masonry construction waste material; at a computational level, participants will explore their designs through Rhino3D and Grasshopper, and at the centre, participants will actualize their designs through the use of multi-axis milling machines to realize their urban interventions.
INSITU Medellin is the first edition of the global initiative between uA and Blokcad Lab with following events scheduled in South America and Europe. Each event will focus on investigating the informal development of the host city, its non-consolidated urban spaces and auto-construction processes. INSITU will be a social and technological platform for knowledge exchange between neighborhoods and communities all over the world. We invite government, industry, academic and public organizations to partner with us at each event.
